Last week I was on a train, headed for home. Like most
people in the carriage in the same carriage, I sat there slouched in my seat,
tired and just waiting for the journey to be over. Then I raised my eyes and spotted
a man and a woman, both probably in their twenties. They were hugging and
kissing and gazing into each other's eyes. I couldn’t pull my gaze away. The obvious love
between them was beautiful to watch.
Especially since they were both wheelchair-bound. They seemed to be crippled
in the legs.
The amazing thing was this: what they couldn’t use didn't stop
them from living. They touched, they embraced, and they kissed. Most of all,
unlike most of us, their faces were wreathed in smiles.
Watching them, I felt both touched and ashamed. Touched
to witness a love story unfolding in front of my eyes. Ashamed because I had so
much to be grateful for, and for a moment I had forgotten.
There's a lot we can learn from people who are not
fortunate enough to have what we have and yet they seem so much happier.
What are
you grateful for?
We had a very warm week here in Vienna, Austria. After
a long and bitter winter, it feels great to finally feel sunrays dancing on my
shoulders.
